Former England captain Nasser Hussain has heavily criticized the poor performance and declining batting standards of the Sri Lanka T20 team currently touring England. He made these remarks while speaking to Sky Sports following the team’s six-wicket defeat in the second T20 match, which resulted in a 2-0 series loss to England.
Hussain noted that the current team falls far short of the high standards set by formidable players of the past, such as Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Aravinda de Silva, and Marvan Atapattu.
He pointed out that the batsmen are failing—particularly on English pitches—by attempting to play aggressively from the very start; he emphasized the need for them to master proper timing and shot placement.
Meanwhile, veteran cricketer Kumar Sangakkara also raised concerns regarding the Sri Lankan team’s selection policies, stability, and player fitness. He expressed his dissatisfaction with decisions such as dropping lead spinner Maheesh Theekshana from the team and promoting Kamil Mishara to the number three spot.
Following their 14th consecutive T20 defeat against England, Sri Lanka remains in ninth place in the T20 rankings, and captain Charith Asalanka has acknowledged that the team still has a long way to go to reach the expected standard.
