Former Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews has confirmed his retirement from international cricket, marking the end of a 17-year illustrious career.
He made the announcement in an exclusive interview with The Sunday Morning Sports ahead of the first Test against India in Galle.
The 39-year-old Mathews, who played his final Test against Bangladesh in June last year, said it was important to retire at the right time as a player and that he was completely satisfied with the decision he had made.
Although he had said at the time of his retirement that he would be available to contribute to Test cricket if required, he has now decided to retire from international cricket altogether, having embarked on a new journey as a commentator.
Mathews, who scored 8,214 runs in 119 Tests in a 17-year cricket career, also scored 7,332 runs in ODIs and T20Is (316 ODIs).
Appointed Sri Lanka’s youngest Test captain at the age of 25 in 2013, he led the team to several notable victories, including a historic Test series win over England in 2014 and a 3-0 Test series win over Australia in 2016.
Mathews also captained the Sri Lankan ODI team to victory in the 2014 Asia Cup and was the team’s vice-captain when Sri Lanka won the T20 World Cup that same year.
Angelo Mathews’ legacy as one of the greatest all-rounders and a successful captain in the history of Sri Lankan cricket is an example for future generations.
