Undoubtedly considered the greatest and most versatile all-rounder in world cricket, former West Indies batsman Sir Garfield Sobers has passed away.
He was 89 at the time of his death, and his passing has deeply saddened the entire cricketing world.
Cricket West Indies expressed its condolences on his death, saying, “While a great innings has come to an end, Sir Garfield Sobers will live on in our hearts forever.”
Sobers played 93 Tests for West Indies between 1954 and 1974, scoring 8,032 runs at a high average of 57.78.
He was also a versatile bowler, taking 235 Test wickets, using both fast and spin.
An attacking left-arm batsman, Sobers scored 365 not out against Pakistan in 1958, which remained the world’s highest Test score for 36 years.
In addition to international cricket, Sobers also played for Nottinghamshire in the English county cricket tournament. In 1968, he became the first player in the world to hit six sixes in a single over in a first-class cricket match.
He was knighted in 1975 for his invaluable services to cricket, and this incomparable player was also named among the five greatest cricketers of the 20th century by Wisden magazine.
