100 Years of Sri Lanka–New Zealand Cricket Ties: Special Bilateral Discussion with the High Commissioner of New Zealand!

I had the pleasure of engaging in a highly productive bilateral discussion today (August 31) with H.E. David Pine, High Commissioner of New Zealand to Sri Lanka, at the Ministry premises.

The first historic cricket match between Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) and New Zealand was played on October 17, 1937. Our discussion focused on organising a special celebratory cricket series in New Zealand in January 2027 to mark the centenary of cricketing ties between the two nations. I also gratefully accepted the High Commissioner’s gracious official invitation to attend and witness this historic series.

Furthermore, the High Commissioner pledged the New Zealand Government’s full support toward the development of rugby in Sri Lanka, the implementation of Youth Exchange Programmes, and the overall empowerment of Sri Lankan youth.
