Cabinet Green-Lights New Bill to Curb Cricket Corruption
Cabinet approval has been granted to publish the new bill drafted for the restructuring of Sri Lanka Cricket in the Government Gazette and subsequently submit it to Parliament for approval. Initial approval to draft a new bill aimed at restructuring Sri Lanka Cricket had been granted during the Cabinet meeting held on June 8, 2026. Accordingly, the Legal Draftsman has prepared this bill to incorporate a new ‘Sri Lanka Cricket’ institution, designed to ensure the governance, regulation, promotion, development, and administration of cricket in Sri Lanka are conducted in a more systematic manner. The primary objective of this Act is to work towards the advancement of cricket, guided by principles such as good governance, integrity, transparency, accountability, inclusivity, and the provision of equal opportunities. Furthermore, this measure legally establishes the necessary powers and functions to safeguard the well-being of all participants and to rid the sport of cricket of corruption and other forms of misconduct. The relevant Bill has already received clearance from the Attorney General. Accordingly, the Cabinet has approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports to publish the Bill in the Government Gazette and subsequently present it to Parliament for enactment.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has heavily criticized the poor performance and declining batting standards of the Sri Lanka T20 team currently touring England. He made these remarks while speaking to Sky Sports following the team's six-wicket defeat in the second T20 match, which resulted in a 2-0 series loss to England. Hussain noted that the current team falls far short of the high standards set by formidable players of the past, such as Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Aravinda de Silva, and Marvan Atapattu. He pointed out that the batsmen are failing—particularly on English pitches—by attempting to play aggressively from the very start; he emphasized the need for them to master proper timing and shot placement. Meanwhile, veteran cricketer Kumar Sangakkara also raised concerns regarding the Sri Lankan team's selection policies, stability, and player fitness. He expressed his dissatisfaction with decisions such as dropping lead spinner Maheesh Theekshana from the team and promoting Kamil Mishara to the number three spot. Following their 14th consecutive T20 defeat against England, Sri Lanka remains in ninth place in the T20 rankings, and captain Charith Asalanka has acknowledged that the team still has a long way to go to reach the expected standard.
