Sri Lanka Captain Chamari Athapaththu Joins ‘Hurricanes’ for the 2026 Australian ‘Big Bash’
Sri Lanka women’s cricket team captain, Chamari Athapaththu, has been signed as an overseas replacement player for the upcoming 2026 Women’s Big Bash League. She will be representing the Hobart Hurricanes. The Hobart Hurricanes management stated that Chamari Athapaththu has been brought into the squad to replace English international player Danni Wyatt-Hodge, who has withdrawn from the tournament due to an injury. The 36-year-old Sri Lankan captain—currently ranked 6th in the international T20 batting rankings—joins the Hurricanes ahead of their first match against the Melbourne Stars this Thursday. Her addition serves as a significant boost for the team. Chamari Athapaththu has previously participated in seven editions of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), playing 69 matches while representing the Perth Scorchers, Melbourne Renegades, and Sydney Thunder. Administration of Motor Sports Association under Ministry Secretary
Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mr. Sunil Kumara Gamage issued a gazette notice assigning the administrative responsibilities of the Motor Sports Association to the Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Accordingly, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports has taken steps to temporarily suspend the registration of the National Sports Association related to motor sports in Sri Lanka. According to the Extraordinary Gazette Notice No. 2511/21 issued in that regard, the Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has been appointed as the competent authority to supervise the administrative affairs of the association. The appointment will be effective from October 15, 2026. The responsibilities assigned to the Ministry Secretary are to streamline the administrative affairs of the association, amend the existing constitution in accordance with the Sports Act and carry out the necessary activities for electing a new board of officers. According to the revised constitution, the Ministry Secretary is also empowered to manage the administrative affairs of the association until an annual general meeting is held and a new board of officers is elected. Registration of Cycling and Badminton Associations Temporarily Suspended; Transitional Committees Appointed
Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr. Sunil Kumara Gamage, has taken steps to temporarily suspend the registration of the national sports associations for cycling and badminton. Extraordinary Gazette notifications regarding this were issued on October 20, 2026, and separate transitional committees have been appointed to streamline the administrative affairs of both the cycling and badminton associations. This action has been taken under Sections 32 and 33 (as amended) of the Sports Act No. 25 of 1973. According to the Gazette notification issued regarding the temporary suspension of the registration of the Cycling Federation of Sri Lanka, a transitional committee—chaired by Mr. Anura Maharachchi—has been appointed to oversee the future administrative operations of the sport. The committee has been entrusted with responsibilities including overseeing the administrative affairs of the Cycling Federation, investigating alleged fraud, corruption, and other irregularities within the association, drafting a new constitution in compliance with the Sports Act, and registering eligible members.
