A new representative body called ‘Sri Lanka Professional Cricketers Association’ (SLPCA) has been formed with the aim of representing and providing the necessary support to Sri Lankan professional cricketers.
Sri Lanka limited overs cricket captain Kusal Mendis has been appointed as its inaugural president.
Regarding the association, Kusal Mendis said:
“We are proud to be able to form the SLPCA to represent Sri Lankan players at such an important time. We look forward to working in a friendly and cooperative manner with Sri Lanka Cricket, the Translation Committee and other stakeholders as the game of cricket progresses.”
Sri Lanka Women’s Cricket Team Captain Chamari Atapattu also appreciated the move and said that this is another important step forward for Sri Lankan cricket.
“The establishment of a players’ association is another important step. It will also allow Sri Lankan cricketers to join their peers in international cricket and other sports who benefit from active player representation.”
Additionally, national players Binura Fernando and Wanindu Hasaranga also endorsed the move, stating that it will give players a common voice and will also help in the future development of the game.
SLPCA’s main role and international relations
– The association works independently to protect the rights of players, support their welfare and development, and represent the voices of players in decisions affecting their careers.
– This new Sri Lankan players’ association is reported to be affiliated with the World Cricketers’ Association (WCA), the global body representing professional cricketers.
– Over 750 current international players from 17 of the world’s 19 leading cricketing nations are already involved in WCA programmes.
– With Sri Lanka joining the association, Sri Lankan players join players from Australia, South Africa, England, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, USA, New Zealand, Canada, Uganda, West Indies, Netherlands, Ireland, Scotland, Namibia and Italy.
