President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has assured that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure the security of the Sri Lankan cricket team participating in a cricket tournament in Pakistan, reports the state-run newspaper ‘Dinamina’.
According to the report, a bomb attack in the city of Islamabad has caused a serious unrest and due to this situation, close attention has been paid to the cricket tournament in that country.
The Sri Lankan cricket team has gone to Rawalpindi, Pakistan, for a T20 tri-series between Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Zimbabwe.
So far, only one match has been played there and several more matches are scheduled to be held in the future.
The President, who spoke personally with the Chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka and Head Coach of the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team, Sanath Jayasuriya, has assured that every possible step will be taken to ensure the security of the Sri Lankan cricket team participating in the tournament. Defense Secretary Sampath Thuyyakontha has held discussions with the security chiefs of Pakistan, and special security has been provided to the Sri Lankan cricket team. Security teams have also been deployed to the hotels where they will be staying and this has been confirmed.
Recalling the support shown by the Pakistani cricket team to Sri Lanka during the 1996 World Cup when cricket teams from some countries refused to visit Sri Lanka due to bomb scares in the country, the President has instructed the cricket team to remain in Sri Lanka until the end of the tournament as a token of gratitude.
The President has also assured that every possible step will be taken in collaboration with the government of that country to ensure their security during that period.
