In the entire history of cricket, there has been only one successful chase of a target exceeding 400 runs—South Africa’s pursuit of 435 against Australia. Until today, that stood as the only instance where a team had successfully chased down a score of over 400.
Today, Sri Lanka became the second team to achieve this feat, successfully chasing down 400 runs against England.
Previously, while chasing a target of 415 against India, Sri Lanka fell just short, finishing on 411. Although they were quite unfortunate to lose that match by 3 runs, today, the tide of fortune has turned in their favor.
Chasing a target of over 400 runs is an incredibly difficult task, regardless of the pitch conditions or the circumstances of the match.
Today, almost all of Sri Lankan batters performed exceptionally well. When a team performs this brilliantly and bats so superbly, there is no reason to hesitate in saying so. Avishka Fernando, Dasun Shanaka, and Janith Liyanage played superb innings.
Pawan Rathnayake proved once again why he deserves a place in the Sri Lanka team.
Janith Liyanage played an innings that truly deserves to go down in history; it was instrumental in steering Sri Lanka toward victory. I believe this is the very win that Sri Lanka needed.
This is a truly historic run chase.
