West Indies registered a record-breaking win in the tournament with a chase of 100 runs.

Six-time world champions Australia also showed their dominance by winning their first match.

A brilliant innings by Shemayne Campbell helped West Indies register a historic 7-wicket win over New Zealand.

This is the second highest total chased by a team in the history of the Women’s T20 World Cup.

Batting first, New Zealand scored 162 for 5 in 20 overs.

Brooke Halliday scored 40 and Isabella Gase scored 35.

Aaliyah Alleyne bowled brilliantly for West Indies, taking 4 for 21.

Chasing a mammoth target of 163, West Indies lost their first wicket early, but captain Hayley Mathews (48) and Shemayne Campbell put on a spectacular display.

Making the most of the missed catches and stumping opportunities from the New Zealand players, Campbell scored an unbeaten 90 off 62 balls, including 7 fours and 3 sixes, to lead West Indies to victory with one ball to spare.

This match was also the 100th T20 International for New Zealand captain Amelia Kerr.

Australia got off to a strong start in the tournament by defeating South Africa by 65 runs in the other match held yesterday.

This also allowed Australia to respond to the defeat they suffered in the 2024 World Cup semi-final against South Africa.

Batting first, Australia were struggling at 24 for 2, but PB Litchfield scored a quick 50 off 23 balls to build the innings.

Later, Ellyse Perry (32) and Georgia Wareham (32) put on a strong partnership as Australia posted a solid 172 for 8.

Chasing a mammoth target of 173, the South African batsmen were helpless against the Australian spin team.

Skipper Sophie Molyneux (2/17) broke the top order, while Georgia Wareham took 3 wickets for 13 runs to restrict South Africa to 107.

Skipper Laura Wolvaardt scored 44 runs for South Africa.
