The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have officially announced the qualification process for the men’s and women’s cricket (T20) teams for the 2028 Los Angeles (LA28) Olympic Games. Accordingly, only 6 countries each from both the men’s and women’s categories are scheduled to qualify for the Olympics this year.
Australia, Great Britain, India and South Africa have already secured one Olympic berth each from each continent based on their performance in the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup for the women’s category. For the men’s category, the top 4 teams from Asia, Africa, Europe and Oceania will qualify directly based on the ICC T20 rankings as of 31 December 2026.
The host US men’s and women’s teams must be ranked in the top 15 in the world before the end of 2026 to qualify directly for the Olympics. In addition to the teams thus selected, a special “ICC Olympics Qualifier” is planned to be held in 2027 to select the remaining final teams. The West Indies are not recognized as a country by the Olympic Committee, so they cannot participate directly, and instead a separate qualification tournament is scheduled to be held for the Caribbean region. At the Los Angeles Olympics, these teams will be divided into two groups of three each and will compete in the preliminary round, with a total of 28 matches planned for the tournament.
