A new code of conduct has been introduced for England men’s cricket team players, which advises players to refrain from drinking alcohol the day before and after a match.

A midnight curfew was introduced for players following several off-field disciplinary issues during the previous Ashes tour. However, the rules were unclear and led to a controversial nightclub incident involving Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson.

The new code of conduct has been issued to England players following that incident, according to the Telegraph.

The updated policy will apply to every day of any tournament, whether at home or on tour.

It also recommends that alcohol should not be consumed on the day before a match, on match days and the day immediately following the match. For example, if a Test match is played over five days, these restrictions will apply until the following day.

However, head coach Brendon McCullum and director of cricket Rob Key have been given full discretion to relax these regulations when they deem it appropriate. This will allow the management to give players the freedom to celebrate victories, as well as to continue cricketing traditions such as the traditional friendly meetings with the opposing team at the end of an Ashes series.
