Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama yesterday ordered the issuance of a warrant against a Pakistani national who served as the manager of the Dambulla Thunders cricket team, on charges of aiding and abetting players to influence them to fix matches during the 2024 LPL tournament.
The order was issued after considering a request made by the Special Police Unit for the Prevention of Sports Misconduct, informing them that the suspect had not appeared before the unit to give a statement in connection with the ongoing investigation into the match-fixing.
The court was also informed that a notice has already been issued to the team owner, Tamim Rahman, a British citizen of Bangladeshi origin, to appear before the police to record a statement from the manager essential to the investigation.
However, the police told the court that the manager had failed to comply with the notice and had not appeared.
Presenting evidence before the court, Chief Inspector Supul Vidanage, the officer in charge of the Special Police Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Sports Misconduct, stated that it was essential to record the manager’s evidence as charges were to be filed against Tamim Rahman.
He said that the manager, Mujeen Al Rahman, should also give a statement as it is alleged that the discussions held at a leading hotel in Colombo regarding match-fixing took place with his knowledge and consent.
After considering the facts presented, the Magistrate ordered that the progress of the investigations be reported to the court on December 5.
