The launch of the world’s first-ever Women’s T20 World Cup for the Blind (‘Women’s T20 world Cup – Cricket for the Blind 2025’) and the official website of the Blind Cricket Association was held today (October 01) at the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo under the patronage of the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage.
The event was attended by Member of Parliament Sugath Wasantha Silva, President of the Blind Cricket Association of India Dr. G. Kivadasannavar, President of the Blind Cricket Association of Sri Lanka M. R Sudesh Tharanga, President of the Indian Cricket Association for the Visually Impaired, Mr. Buse Gawda, members of the Sri Lanka Cricket Association for the Visually Impaired and members of the Indian Cricket Association participated.
Speaking at the media briefing, the Minister said that he considers it an injustice to identify individuals based on their physical disabilities. The Minister also asked them to kindly use another name instead of that name.
Stating that the current government will provide maximum support for this tournament, the Minister further said that the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will intervene to provide all the necessary facilities to this cricket team representing the country for the tournament.
Responding to the questions raised by the journalists, the Minister further said that the increase in the number of categories in the game will also lead to an increase in the number of athletes and matches. The Minister also said that it is the policy of the current government to involve all citizens of the country in sports.
This tournament will be held with the participation of 07 countries of the world namely Australia, England, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the United States of America. Sri Lanka and India are co-hosting this first-ever T20 Women’s World Cup for the Visually Impaired. The tournament will begin in India and 15 matches including the closing ceremony will be held in Sri Lanka from November 14 to 23.
