Former Sri Lankan cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara is set to return to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) coaching staff in a key role, Cricinfo reports.
This comes after Rahul Dravid, who was the team’s head coach, stepped down from the position.
Sangakkara had been Rajasthan’s director of cricket since 2021, and under his supervision, Rajasthan, led by Sanju Samson, qualified for the finals twice in four seasons.
RR qualified for the finals for the first time since winning the IPL title in 2008 in 2022, but they lost to Gujarat Titans.
Rajasthan, who finished fifth in 2023, qualified for the finals again in the 2024 season, where they lost in Qualifier 2.
Rahul Dravid, who captained RR in 2012 and 2013 and then as a consultant in 2014 and 2015, was appointed as the head coach of RR for the 2025 season after leading India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
However, RR won only 4 out of 14 matches in the 2025 season.
Dravid had signed a multi-year contract with the team, but he recently left it.
Meanwhile, captain Sanju Samson had requested to be released from the team after the 2025 season, and thus Sangakkara’s first priority will be to resolve the issue of RR’s leadership.
