The Sri Lanka Cricket has decided to pay compensation of US$164,000 (nearly Rs. 60 million) to former head coach of the Sri Lanka national cricket team Chandika Hathurusingha for breaching his service agreement by not properly implementing it.
The compensation is to be paid after both parties agreed to settle the case filed at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland against Mr. Hathurusingha’s removal from his post.
He was appointed as the head coach for a three-year term in 2017 and the cricket body had taken steps to remove him from the post in 2019.
Mr. Hathurusingha initially demanded compensation of US$5 million, which was later reduced to US$450,000, claiming that his removal from the post was unfair.
However, after lengthy negotiations, both parties have agreed to withdraw the case by paying a sum of $164,000.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board had earlier stated that Hathurusingha was removed due to the setbacks suffered by the Sri Lankan team under his coaching and dissatisfaction with his services.
The incident was also discussed intensively in the Parliamentary Committee on Public Business, where it was revealed that this settlement was reached to avoid legal issues.
