The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have officially announced the official qualification system for the men’s and women’s Twenty20 tournaments at the Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) Olympic Games, which will see cricket return to the Olympic scene after a long hiatus.

Accordingly, six countries each from both the men’s and women’s categories are set to compete in this historic tournament.

At least one team from each of the Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania regions has been guaranteed to participate.

In the women’s category, Australia, Great Britain, India and South Africa have already secured Olympic berths based on their performances in the 2026 ICC Women’s Twenty20 World Cup.

The hosts, the United States, will qualify directly by finishing in the top 15 of the rankings, while a special Caribbean qualifier will be held for the West Indies region.

A special ICC Olympic Qualifier tournament will be held in 2027 with the participation of eight countries to select the remaining final teams.

Each team will be able to enter 15 players, and the teams will be divided into two groups of three each for the preliminary round.

They will then have the opportunity to compete against teams from the opposite group.

A total of 28 men’s and women’s matches will be played at the iconic Pomona Cricket Ground, with the top teams competing for gold, silver and bronze medals.
