As part of its 150th anniversary celebrations, Richmond College, Galle, has organized a series of All-Island Rugby and Badminton Championships, highlighting its longstanding commitment to sporting excellence and youth development.
Founded on 1 May 1876, Richmond College introduced organised sports to its students just four years after its establishment. This year marks 146 years of sporting tradition at the school, a legacy that has produced many outstanding sportsmen and contributed significantly to the development of school sports in Sri Lanka.
The College has built a strong reputation in both rugby and badminton, with particular success in badminton, where it has secured multiple All-Island Championship titles over the years.
As part of its sesquicentennial celebrations, Richmond College is hosting these national-level tournaments to share its sporting heritage and experience with schools across the country while celebrating its contribution to Sri Lankan school sports.
The All-Island Under-16 Rugby Tournament, featuring 14 leading schools, will be held on Sunday (2) starting at 7 am at the Board of Investment (BOI) Grounds, Koggala.
The Richmond Cricket Academy Premier League (RCAPL), organised by the Richmond College Old Boys Association, will be conducted from today (31) up to Sunday (2).
The Richmond Cricket Academy currently provides structured coaching to nearly 300 talented young cricketers, making it one of the most successful grassroots cricket development programmes in the region.
The All-Island Under-15 Badminton Championship, conducted under four competition categories, will take place from 4-8 August at Richmond College and the Dadella Sports Complex, Galle.
The tournament will attract competitors from 170 boys and girls’ schools across the country, with an estimated 1700 players and officials participating, making it one of the biggest school badminton championships here.
Kasagala Plantation Group has come forward as the principal sponsor for this series of All-Island Rugby and Badminton Championships.
These tournaments form an integral part of Richmond College’s 150th anniversary celebrations, reflecting the school’s enduring commitment to sporting excellence, youth development, and the promotion of healthy competition among schools throughout Sri Lanka.
