The swimming pool at the Mannar District Sports Complex, built at a cost of Rs. 94 million from the Sports Development Department’s budget allocation, was handed over to the athletes today (Oct. 03) under the patronage of the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage.

Participating in this event, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports said that he had come to the Mannar District in January to look into the construction of a sports complex for the needs of the children in this area, and as promised, he had built this sports complex within a year and handed it over to the athletes.

The Minister said that the development of the North and East regions has received less attention from previous governments and that the current government is paying special attention to the development of these regions, and added that the remaining 400m track of the sports complex and other works will be completed within a year.

The Minister said that it is the objective and responsibility of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to direct the brightest children in all districts of the country to sports without any discrimination such as North, South, East, etc. He also commented on the Mission Olympic program that is currently being implemented to encourage athletes to achieve international achievements.
