The Sri Lankan national women’s chess team returned to the island after winning the gold medal in Category C at the World Chess Olympiad held in Uzbekistan.
It is noteworthy that five young players—all under the age of 19—were instrumental in securing this gold medal for Sri Lanka at a massive tournament featuring female chess players from 189 countries.
The outstanding performances of Dahamdi Sandula, Oshini Gunawardena, Sadithi Kusalya, Yenuthi Sahanli, and Sayumi Halangoda have brought great international acclaim to the country.
Even though major media channels may not be highlighting it, this is truly a monumental victory that we, as a nation, ought to celebrate; while Sri Lanka Cricket faces increasing embarrassment on the global stage, our young athletes are bringing significant triumphs home to Sri Lanka through sports like this.
