Competing against athletes from 50 countries at the World University Weightlifting Championship held in Doha, Qatar, the two university athletes representing Sri Lanka for the first time made history by winning a total of six medals.
L.G.A.S. Liyanage, a fourth-year student at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and a resident of Polonnaruwa, competed in the 60kg weight category.
He achieved a historic milestone at this international university tournament by winning gold medals in all three events: Snatch, Clean and Jerk, and the overall total.
T.M.N.S. Dissanayake, a first-year student at Sabaragamuwa University and a resident of Galgamuwa, competed in the 65kg weight category.
He also succeeded in winning three bronze medals across the Snatch, Clean and Jerk, and overall total events. Bringing home six medals amidst competitors from 50 countries marks a significant milestone in the history of Sri Lankan university weightlifting.
