The Sports Development Department has initiated a special program to promote school sports in Sri Lanka and secure the future of athletes, says Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage.
Under this, a program to provide sports equipment to 40 selected schools across the island is being implemented, and arrangements have been made to provide equipment sets worth Rs. 800,000 to 1000,000 per school, he further stated.
In this, special attention has been paid to schools in the North, East and other remote areas with minimal sports facilities. The aim is to provide essential equipment kits including mattresses to children who excel in areas such as athletics but lack even the minimum facilities.
The Minister said that the main reason for the decline in children’s interest in sports is the uncertainty about their future after sports…
He further said that a cabinet paper has been approved to provide jobs in the public sector to athletes who excel at the national level to overcome this situation.
“Our aim is to instill confidence in children that they have a successful future through sports. We believe that this will pave the way for Sri Lanka to produce world-class athletes in the coming years.”
