A special ceremony was held today (04th) at the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to honor the athletes who brought pride to Sri Lanka by winning 7 medals at the 6th Asian Beach Games held in Sanya, China. Their exceptional performance elevated Sri Lanka to the 10th position in the medal tally among 45 Asian nations.
The event was presided over by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Hon. Sunil Kumara Gamage, with the participation of the Deputy Minister of Sports, Mr. Sugath Thilakarathne, and the newly appointed President of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL), Mr. Asanga Seneviratne.
Sri Lanka demonstrated record-breaking talent during the games, securing one Gold medal, two Silver medals, and four Bronze medals:
Gold Medal: Nipuni Wasana – Beach Wrestling (Women’s 50kg)
Silver Medal: Ishara Samanmali – Beach Athletics (Women’s Long Jump)
Silver Medal: Women’s Kabaddi Team
Bronze Medal: Jayathra Sampath – Beach Athletics (Men’s Long Jump)
Bronze Medal: Sashikala Lankathilaka – Beach Athletics (Women’s Long Jump)
Bronze Medal: Men’s Relay Team (4x60m Relay)
Bronze Medal: Men’s Kabaddi Team
“Mission Olympic” and the New Path for Sports
Addressing the gathering, Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage stated that the victory achieved by Nipuni Wasana and the team is a significant milestone for the “Mission Olympic” program initiated by the Ministry. Deputy Minister Sugath Thilakarathne emphasized that the Ministry is fully committed to guiding athletes toward the future Olympic dream by providing professional-level training and facilities.
