It is reported that the ICC has decided to adopt a hybrid format for selecting countries for the cricket tournament at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Foreign sports media have reported that a decision has been reached in this regard at the ICC meeting being held in Singapore these days.
Cricket, which has been included in an Olympic Games for the first time since 1900, is scheduled to be played by 6 men’s and 6 women’s teams each.
Accordingly, some teams are scheduled to qualify based on the ICC T20 rankings. The other teams will have to compete in a qualifying tournament.
Since the Indian men’s team is currently ranked first in the T20 world rankings, it is expected that they will be able to qualify for the Olympics based on the rankings.
The Sri Lankan men’s team is currently ranked 7th. Since the United States is the host country of the upcoming Olympic Games, the American women’s and men’s teams are likely to qualify directly for the tournament.
Accordingly, since only five other countries have the opportunity to qualify for the tournament, the Sri Lankan men’s team will have to play in the qualifying tournament as per the current situation.
Although the Los Angeles Olympics are scheduled to be held from July 14 to 30, 2028, cricket and several other sports will start a few days before that. Accordingly, the cricket matches will begin two days before the official start of the Games, i.e. on July 12, 2028, and the medal matches for the men’s and women’s competitions are scheduled to be held on July 19 and July 29.
The matches will be held at the temporarily constructed Fairgrounds Stadium in Pomona, about 48 kilometers from Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, the ICC has also decided to give the USA Cricket Association, which has been under heavy criticism for a long time due to administrative problems, another 3 months to resolve those problems.
Although the ICC has the ability to ban the USA Cricket Association in such a case, since they are the host country of the 2028 Olympics, the ICC has had to resolve this issue in another way.
