The ‘Javelin Fiesta’ Central Province Emerging Sports Talent Recognition Program, organized under the guidance of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Department of Sports Development, was successfully held recently at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy.

The event, which was held under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Sports Sugath Thilakaratne, was attended by the Additional District Secretary of Kandy, the Director of Physical Education of the Central Province, the Director of Sports Development of the Central Province, the Chairman of the Kandy Bodybuilding Association and many district officers of the Sports Development Department.

In this program, which involved a large group of athletes representing all areas of the Central Province, talent identification was carried out under two main evaluation sections:

Event-Specific Javelin Tests:

Full approach javelin throw
Short approach javelin throw
Physical Literacy Tests:

Hockey ball throw
Standing broad jump
Stand and reach test
10m × 4 shuttle run
30m sprint
300m run
3kg backward overhead throw

These evaluations were conducted for age groups Both the women’s and men’s divisions were held under the age groups of Under-16, Under-18, Under-20 and Open. Based on the displayed talents, efforts were made to identify the best athletes who can be developed for the future national and international level.

Accordingly, 64 athletes who showed the highest performance in the overall evaluations are to be selected for the “Central Province Javelin Fiesta Development Pool”. These athletes will be provided with formal training and regular monitoring in accordance with the long-term athlete development plan established under the Javelin Fiesta program.

The objective of preparing a strong and sustainable future athlete base for the javelin event in the Central Province was successfully achieved through this program. The entire program benefited from the enthusiastic participation of the athletes, the support of the provincial and district authorities, and the proper organization of the sports officials.
