The 2026 World University Weightlifting Championships are currently being held in Doha, Qatar 🇶🇦. In it, Avidu Liyanagedara of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura won the gold medal in the 60kg weight class with a total weight of 237kg, while Nipun Dissanayake of the University of Sabaragamuwa won the bronze medal in the 65kg weight class with a total weight of 220kg.
It is a special moment to join history as the first medal won by a Sri Lankan athlete in any sport in the history of the World University Games. Mr. Sujan Walgampaya, Physical Education Consultant of the University of Colombo, participated in this championship as the team manager and referee.
