Two of Sri Lanka’s leading schools, D.S. Senanayake College and Gateway College, are set to come calm for the inaugural Founder’s Cup Basketball Encounter, celebrating the continuing legacy of the late legendary educationist R. I. T. Alles, who founded both institutions.

The inaugural Founder’s Cup encounter will be played under lights on September 6, from 3.00 p.m. at the Gateway College courts in Rajagiriya.

The annual basketball encounter is being introduced as a tribute to Alles, whose vision and dedication played a significant role in shaping both schools and the lives of thousands of young Sri Lankans.

Basketball has a strong tradition at both institutions. D.S. Senanayake College has produced numerous national captains, players, coaches, and administrators who have made significant contributions to Sri Lankan basketball. Gateway College, despite introducing the sport only around two decades ago, has also established itself as a strong force, producing boys and girls who have represented Sri Lanka at the international level.

The D.S. Senanayake College team will be captained by Sanu Perera, while the Gateway College team will be led by Anujitha Samarasinghe, who represented Sri Lanka at the FIBA Under-18 SABA Qualifiers 2026.

The Founder’s Cup is expected to establish a new sporting tradition between the two schools while honoring the remarkable educational legacy of the man whose vision gave birth to both institutions.
