Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage summoned the executive members of the National Olympic Committee to the Sports Ministry today (16) to discuss the decision taken by the International Olympic Committee regarding the National Olympic Committee.
The Minister emphasized that this crisis has been brewing for about a year and that it is an internal administrative crisis within the Sri Lanka Olympic Committee and steps should be taken to resolve it as soon as possible.
The Minister stated before them that the decision taken by the International Olympic Committee at this time has been affected by the internal crisis within the National Olympic Committee, and that athletes should no longer be denied the opportunity to freely pursue sports as a sport due to this crisis, and that every athlete should be given the opportunity to freely pursue sports.
The Minister stated that the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports would provide the National Olympic Committee with the maximum support it could in resolving the internal crisis currently raging within the National Olympic Committee, and urged the National Olympic Committee to act in accordance with the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee from now on.
Deputy Minister of Sports Sugath Thilakaratne, Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs Eranga Gunasekara and Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Aruna Bandara and other officials were present at the event, while the National Olympic Committee was represented by its Chairman, Secretary and members of the Executive Committee.
