Bringing fame and honour to his motherland, and putting Sri Lanka on the global powerlifting map, ace power lifter Darin Weerasinghe was in recent times crowned champion at the World Masters Powerlifting Championship held in Sun City, South Africa.

Weerasinghe is the first Sri Lankan to accomplish this remarkable feat, after competing in the competition that saw the participation of over 800 male and female athletes from 47 nations.

He took part in the 120kg Equipped M1 Group which saw lifters from Syria, UK, South Africa, and France to name a few. 

His lifts comprised of a 260kg Squat, 187.5kg Bench Press, and 272.5kg Deadlift which edged him with a lead of 2.5Kg total to win the overall Gold medal and become the first Sri Lankan world champion in powerlifting. He also protected a Gold medal in the Squat and Deadlift, and Silver in the Bench Press.

Darin Weerasinghe is also a seven time Sri Lanka National powerlifting champion, Asian Bench Press champion, and Commonwealth champion as well. With this exclusive triumph, he has secured his place in the World Games 2025.
