A few years after the successful conclusion of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar is once again preparing to host another major global sporting event that will capture the attention of the world. Accordingly, all arrangements have been made to hold the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Doha, Qatar. This will go down in history as the first Basketball World Cup to be held in an Arab country.
Here are some of the main information and highlights of the tournament:
The tournament will be held in a grand manner for 17 days from August 27 to September 12, 2027.
32 of the world’s best countries are scheduled to compete in a total of 92 matches.
Qatar, as the host country, has qualified directly for this year’s tournament, and it is noteworthy that they have qualified for a World Cup basketball tournament since 2006.
80 strong teams from around the world are already facing the hot qualifying rounds to select the remaining 31 countries.
Unlike previous World Cup tournaments, this time all matches will be held under the “single-city approach” with all matches limited to the capital Doha. The most notable advantage here is that all the stadiums are located within a very short distance of about 30 minutes from each other.
Super stadiums where the matches will be held:
– Lusail Arena: With a capacity of more than 15,000 spectators, the decisive semi-finals and finals of the tournament will be held here.
– Al Janoub Stadium: This stadium, which was used for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, is currently being renovated into a state-of-the-art basketball stadium.
– Al Attiyah Arena and Duhail Arena: These will be used for other matches.
According to Doha News, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Sagklis said that the new concept will reduce the travel burden on players. He also pointed out that it will allow spectators to easily watch several matches live, even on the same day, using the Doha Metro system.
