The first phase of the “Javelin Fiesta” National Talent Identification Programe, designed to elevate Sri Lanka’s javelin throw to future international victory, is set to commence on July 31st centered around the Central Province.
A special press conference to brief the media regarding this landmark initiative jointly organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Department of Sports Development was held under the patronage of the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Hon. Sunil Kumara Gamage.
During the event, a financial grant cheque worth LKR 2,500,000/= (2.5 Million) was handed over by the Minister to international javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga, who serves as the Brand Ambassador for the programme, to support his future athletic developments and training plans.
The press conference was attended by Deputy Minister of Sports Hon. Sugath Thilakarathne, Director General of Sports Development Mr. S. Achchudan, Deputy Director General of Sports Development, Event Coordinator and former javelin thrower Mr. Harshana Kinsley, and key ministry officials.
Core Objectives & Selection Structure:
The primary objective of this project is to discover, scientifically train, and guide promising athletes from schools, athletic clubs, sports schools, and open applications across the Central Province toward the national pool.
Target Categories: 8 categories including Under-16 (Boys/Girls), Under-18 (Boys/Girls), Under-20 (Men/Women), and Open (Men/Women).
Selection Process: 4 athletes per category via Physical Literacy Assessment and 4 athletes via Event-Specific Javelin Tests (Total 8 athletes per category).
Provincial Pool: Establishment of the “Central Province Javelin Squad” comprising 64 selected athletes.
Starting from the provincial level, this nation-wide programme aims to identify exceptional talents island-wide, nurturing future stars capable of winning international medals for Sri Lanka through national-level training camps and specialized development pipelines.
