The 104th National Athletics Championships held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Diyagama concluded with great success, making this year’s competition a unique milestone in the history of Sri Lankan athletics, with the athletes at the forefront of talent setting 5 new records. It was particularly notable that the athletes representing the Sri Lanka Army were at the forefront of breaking these records.
New National Athletics Records Broken
D.M. Harsha Karunaratne (Sri Lanka Army) – 800 meters (Men): After 33 years, he broke the old record in the event, setting a new record of 1:47.80 seconds as the fastest time recorded on local soil.
M. Dimalsha Chathuranga (Sri Lanka Army) – 400m Hurdles (Men): He clocked a time of 49.41 seconds and was also awarded the “Most Outstanding Athlete” of the tournament.
A. Puvitharan (Sri Lanka Army) – Pole Vault (Men): He set a new record by clearing 5.10m.
Dilhani Sekhara (Sri Lanka Army – Women’s Javelin Throw): Won the gold medal with a new record by clearing 59.46m.
W.A.M.R. Wijesuriya (Sri Lanka Army – Women’s 10,000m): She set a new record in this event by clocking 33:32.77 minutes.
