At the invitation of the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Rumesh Tharanga, who set a new national record in the men’s javelin throw event at the Indian Open Athletics Championships, met the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage, today (August 14).

During the discussion held here, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage, said that he would like to extend his best wishes to Rumesh Tharanga for all the competitions he will be participating in in the future.

The Minister said that the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will make the necessary interventions to provide all the necessary facilities to Rumesh Tharanga, who is set to compete in the upcoming World Javelin Championship and the 2028 Olympic Games.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Minister of Sports Sugath Thilakaran said that the necessary interventions will be made to keep talented athletes like Rumesh Tharanga, who is ranked seventh in the world with a javelin throw of 86.50 meters, safe in the sport.

The Deputy Minister said that in the future, the knowledge of foreign coaches will be brought to the local coaches and the experience of participating in Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games, etc. will be an investment for future achievements.

The father and coach of Ramesh Tharanga and the Director of Speed Sports Private Limited, Mr. M. Askar Ali, also attended the event and Mr. M. Askar Ali also provided the necessary sports equipment to the player.
