The second day of the 104th National Athletics Championships attracted the attention of sports fans due to the 100m final at the Diyagama Stadium. Dineth Indu Weeraratne managed to win the first place by beating all the competitors with a time of 10.51 seconds, taking full credit for the competition.
The striking feature of this year’s 100m race was the fierce competition between the first place and the other places. Y. Chamod Yodhasinghe won the second place in 10.69 seconds, while M. T. C. de Costa took the third place in 10.70 seconds. The heat of the competition is clearly evident as the first places were decided by very small time intervals of one hundredth of a second.
Also, F. D. C. Piyumal (10.71 seconds), W. M. K. Thamel (10.74 seconds), M. J. Wijesinghe (10.78 seconds), T. S. Hansaja (10.80 seconds) and A. S. M. Safan (10.85 seconds) recorded their maximum strength on the track, occupying positions 4 to 8 respectively.
