The Sri Lankan athletics team, who brought pride to the nation by winning 4 medals at the 6th Asian Beach Games held in Sanya, China, arrived at the Katunayake International Airport yesterday (April 27).

Our athletes managed to secure one Silver medal and three Bronze medals for Sri Lanka during this tournament.

Achievements of the Medalists
Ishara Samanmali: Won the Silver medal in the Women’s Long Jump with a performance of 5.87m. This marks the first-ever Silver medal won by Sri Lanka in athletics in the history of the Asian Beach Games.

Shashikala Lankathilaka: Won the Bronze medal in the Women’s Long Jump with a performance of 5.83m.

Jayatra Sampath Miranda: Secured the Bronze medal in the Men’s Long Jump with a leap of 7.37m.

Men’s 4x60m Relay Team: The team consisting of Manuja Prabhash, Malith Thamel, Malith Tharushan, and Sandun Diyalawatta won the Bronze medal with a timing of 27.57 seconds.

The Director General of the Department of Sports Development, Mr. S. Achchuthan, along with officials from the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Sri Lanka, were present to welcome the victorious athletes. NOC Secretary General Mr. Rifdi Fahmy and the Chairman of the Athletics Commission, Olympian Mr. Niluka Karunaratne, also participated in the event to encourage the athletes.

This victory marks a new leap in Sri Lankan beach athletics. Our heroes, who managed to fly the national flag on the international stage despite limited facilities, deserve the salute of the entire nation.
