Although Sri Lanka has produced many athletes with exceptional talents and achievements at both national and international levels, there is a trend of them retiring prematurely due to the lack of stable employment opportunities.
This situation has negatively impacted Sri Lanka’s ability to retain talent, maintain high performance, and remain competitive on the international stage. Furthermore, it has been identified that the number of permanent jobs available within the Armed Forces is insufficient, and the opportunities within the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and its affiliated institutions are also limited.
Therefore, with the aim of retaining high-performing athletes within the national sports system and encouraging international success, the Cabinet has approved a proposal presented by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports. The proposal aims to formulate a suitable policy framework to provide employment opportunities in the public, semi-government, and statutory sectors through a transparent, fair, and merit-based selection process, ensuring the long-term job security of athletes.
