The 2025 Sri Lanka Junior Match Play Championship finished in fine style at the Royal Colombo Golf Club, with Reshan Algama charming the Boys’ championship while Kaya Daluwatte accounting for the Girls’ segment, which was subsidized by Perera and Sons.
In the Boys’ Gold Division final for the Rukmini Kodagoda Trophy, seasoned campaigner Algama overcame the spirited challenge of Thangadorai Deshan, excellently dubbed the massive killer of the tournament. Deshan, who had toppled higher-ranked players earlier in the week, fought back to level the match midway. However, Reshan, with years of local and international amateur experience, displayed extraordinary composure under pressure. With accurate iron play and a steely short game, he closed out the match 3/2 to secure the title.
In the Girls’ Gold Division, Sri Lanka’s most promising young golfing impression, Daluwatte, lived up to her standing with a commanding performance against Aaraadhi Samararatne, clinching victory 7/6. Daluwatte’s dominance was evident from the opening hole, her steadiness and precision leaving no room for a comeback. With her experience in playing golf in India, she looked a yard faster in her method among the girls, showing a clear lead.
In the Silver Division, the Boys’ title went to Thejas Rathiskanth (2/1 over Lavidu Premarathna), while the Girls’ champion was Genuli Weerakoon (2 up over Sithara Lorance). Rathiskanth displayed nerves of steel, sinking a crucial putt on the 17th to shut the door on any comeback from his opponent. Weerakoon kept her focus through a tight contest, creating clutch shots in the final holes to take the title.
Bronze Division Champions emerged as Revaan Amarasinghe (3/2 over Yuvan Rathiskanth) in the Boys’ segment and Vihara Herat (2/1 over Mihnelli Herat) in the Girls’ segment. Amarasinghe presented impressive shot-making and maturity beyond his years, keeping a steady lead throughout the match to seal the win with two holes to spare. Herat’s win was a masterclass in patience, steadily building her advantage before closing out the match in style, whilst Mihnelli showed mature character to take the match to the 17th hole.
The Copper Division Boys’ Championship was a tightly fought affair, with Abhiman Abeywardane edging out India’s Ryan Advik 1 up in a nail-biting finish that went to the final hole. In the Girls’ Championship, Dulkini Kangara displayed great control and accuracy to overthrow Ananya Kishanthan 4/3, sealing her victory with three holes to spare.
The skills competitions added extra excitement, with the Closest to the PIN victors being Anumi Karunathilaka (Girls) and Thejas Rathiskanth (Boys). Longest Drive champions included Varun Fernando (Boys’ Gold Division) and Kaya Daluwatte (Girls’ Gold Division) from the two main division winners.
