The “Chinese Culture Day – Wushu” performance, organized by the Sri Lanka Wushu Federation and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Sri Lanka, was held at the Elphinstone Theatre in Colombo yesterday (3).
The event, which was held under the patronage of the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage, was also attended by the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports said that Wushu is not just a sport but a philosophy based on “harmony, balance and resilience”. The Minister expressed his condolences to the people affected by the recent cyclone ‘Ditwa’ and expressed his gratitude to the Chinese government for its prompt support to Sri Lanka during this difficult time. The Minister also stated that sports contribute to building a healthy, strong and disciplined society.

The Chinese Ambassador said that the Chinese people will always be with the Sri Lankan people as true friends. He also explained that the Chinese government and Chinese organizations have provided more than one million US dollars (US$ 1,000,000) in aid and relief supplies for disaster relief efforts. The Ambassador also said that China is ready to enhance cooperation with Sri Lanka in areas such as disaster prevention and emergency response.

The Ambassador expressed his belief that the Wushu performance embodies Chinese culture and will help further strengthen the friendship between the two countries and deepen people-to-people ties.

The performance demonstrated various Wushu techniques such as Chen-style Tai Chi, New-Part Whip, Sanda Fighting and Tai Chi Fan.
