FIFA has opened an investigation into the disrespectful behaviour of Argentina players following their 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
Argentine players Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala were involved in a clash with Spanish players during the final.
Molina was seen attempting to attack Spain captain Rodri, and the FIFA Disciplinary Committee said the violent behaviour could be considered a “violation of the rules of disciplinary conduct” and “brings a stain on the game of football”.
The Argentine team and its fans have been widely criticized for their behavior throughout the tournament.
They have been heavily criticized for their alleged biased decisions in the semi-final against Egypt, their controversial comments about the Falkland Islands after the match against England, and their racist remarks.
Meanwhile, the ‘Argentina Out’ petition calling for Argentina to be banned from the World Cup has garnered over 23 million (23,316,108) signatures.
This is close to a Guinness World Record.
The petition, which accuses FIFA and referees of favoritism towards Lionel Messi and Argentina, has now been closed, and the huge public response it received in over 170 countries around the world in just one week has become a landmark in football history.
