Otamendi Bids Farewell to the International Stage Alongside Messi

While much of the conversation has focused on Lionel Messi’s retirement from Argentine football, the retirement of another player who has rendered significant service to the team over a long period has been somewhat overshadowed.
That player is defender Nicolás Otamendi.
Like Messi, Otamendi announced his retirement following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup. However, the Argentine Football Association has invited him to participate in the match marking Messi’s farewell, in recognition of his immense contribution to the team.
Having made his international debut for Argentina in 2009, Otamendi played 140 matches for the national team by the time 2026 arrived.
He ranks fifth among players with the most appearances for the Argentine national team in history.
He scored a total of nine goals across those 140 matches. Otamendi stands out for his contributions as a defender for the Argentine national team; he consistently gave his all to prevent the opposition from scoring.
He represented Argentina in four World Cup tournaments: 2010, 2018, 2022, and 2026. He was a key player in the squad that won the World Cup in 2022.
He played as a defender in every match during Argentina’s journey to becoming world champions in 2022.
Otamendi is a highly aggressive player on the pitch and is well-known for frequently engaging in confrontations with opponents. Having a player like him provides an extra boost of intensity to any team, especially when a match becomes heated.
Although he was not a guaranteed starter for Argentina in the 2026 World Cup, he delivered his best performance whenever he was given the opportunity to play. Nicolás Otamendi retires from international football today as a member of the squad that won the 2022 World Cup, the 2021 and 2024 Copa América titles, and the 2022 Finalissima.
He scored a goal in his final international match; his farewell was made even more special by the fact that the assist for that goal—delivered via a corner kick—came from Lionel Messi.
For Argentine fans, however, Nicolás Otamendi represents far more than just a former player; he embodies a significant chapter in the team’s history. It was his proven performance on the pitch that earned him the nickname “El General” (The General) among the supporters.
Nicolás Otamendi leaves the field as a champion, marking the departure of yet another player who helped define the golden era of Argentine football.
