Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) President Jaswar Umar was unanimously elected as the SAFF Vice President at the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Executive Committee meeting held in Bhutan today.
In this historic election, all seven SAFF member countries – India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka – unanimously expressed their support for Jaswar Umar. It is a clear reflection of the respect and trust he has received in the South Asian football sector.
Under the vision and leadership of Jaswar Umar, who took over the leadership of the Sri Lanka Football Federation a little over two years ago, the Sri Lankan football sector has undergone a remarkable transformation. As a result, Sri Lanka’s FIFA world ranking has risen by more than 20 places from 207th to 187th. This is the highest international ranking Sri Lanka has achieved in 15 years and is seen as a result of his commitment, visionary planning and strong leadership.
In addition to progress in international competition, under his administration, the principles of good governance have been established within the Football Federation of Sri Lanka, strengthening domestic football competitions, focusing more on youth and youth football development and implementing a number of new programmes for the sustainable development of football.
In addition to his appointment as SAFF Vice President, Mr. Jaswar Umar currently serves as a member of the FIFA Grassroots Football Committee and a member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Development Committee. These international appointments are a unique honour that confirms his international recognition for football development and good governance.
Football commentators believe that Sri Lankan football is currently entering its most successful and progressive phase in its history. Its next major goal is to win the SAFF Football Championship to be held in November this year.
