
The conclusion of the Sports Week program organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports was held at the Torrington Sports Grounds yesterday (July 31), which falls on National Sports Day, under the patronage of the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage.
The aerobic exercise program was held with the participation of students studying at the Sports Academy and the participation of students from the Rhythmic Yoga Academy. The Sports Week concluded with a yoga program held at the Torrington Stadium yesterday (July 31).
Speaking on the occasion, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage said that the aim of the Sports Week is to create a developed sports culture and produce talented athletes of the future. The Minister said that there are talented athletes in the country who can achieve international success, and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will take necessary measures to lead the athletes to international success.
The Minister said that for a country to develop, there must be a healthy population and for this, it is important to create a sports culture, and he further said that the last day of the Sports Week was chosen as July 31, 1948, based on the date when Duncan White won a gold medal for the country.
The event was attended by a group of officials including Aruna Bandara, Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Dushan Lalisha Kahatapitiya, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency.
