50th National Sports Festival – 2026 (Wushu Tournament)
The Wushu events of the 50th National Sports Festival, jointly organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Department of Sports Development, concluded successfully and in a grand manner at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo on September 25, 26, and 27, 2026. Approximately 170 athletes representing all nine provinces participated in this year's Wushu tournament. Sri Lanka's Sandun Madhusanka and Dilipa Chamika achieved a decisive victory over South Korea in a Pool D match of the men's beach volleyball preliminary round at the 20th Asian Games, currently taking place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.The Sri Lankan duo faced the South Korean pair of Oh Jeongtaek and Bae Sangbin. Applying intense pressure from the very beginning and leaving their opponents with no room to maneuver, Sandun and Dilipa comfortably won the match in straight sets (2-0).The Sri Lankan players won the first set 21-11 with a clear 10-point margin and went on to win the second set 21-10, displaying a dominant performance throughout. The dominance of Sandun and Dilipa is clearly demonstrated by the fact that they did not allow their opponents to cross the 11-point mark in a single round.Winning a match by such a significant margin in the preliminary round provides a major boost to the Sri Lankan team's confidence and rankings ahead of future matches.

The Sri Lanka national football team has achieved another positive milestone in the international football arena. Following their victory against Seychelles recently, the team managed to move up one spot in the FIFA World Rankings.It is noteworthy that the Sri Lankan team, which held the 187th position prior to this match, has risen to the 186th spot as a result of this win.Since the ranking points earned from every victory in international matches directly impact the standings, performance in upcoming games will be crucial for the future trajectory of Sri Lankan football.
Sri Lanka suffers a 223-run defeat against England in the final match
England secured a massive 223-run victory in the third ODI match against Sri Lanka, held at the Kennington Oval in London.Batting first after winning the toss, England posted a formidable total of 355 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs.Tom Banton scored a magnificent century for England, amassing 126 runs off 105 balls, an innings that included 16 fours and 5 sixes.Captain Harry Brook (77 off 66 balls) and Jordan Cox (76 off 52 balls) further bolstered the innings.In the bowling department for Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando claimed 3 wickets for 64 runs, while Sachitha Colombage took 2 wickets for 71 runs. Subsequently, the Sri Lankan team's top-order batsmen—including the openers—failed in their pursuit of a daunting target of 356 runs, and the innings was restricted to 132 runs in 29.1 overs.Captain Kusal Mendis emerged as the team's top scorer, amassing 35 runs off 26 balls.Additionally, Pawan Rathnayake scored 18 runs, Janith Liyanage 19, and Eshan Malinga 14.Facing the English bowling attack, Liam Dawson (3 for 26) and Gus Atkinson (2 for 28) dismantled the Sri Lankan innings.Consequently, the Sri Lankan team suffered a disappointing end to both the three-match ODI series and the T20 series.

Upamalika Ravihari Secures 7th Place in Asian Games Weightlifting with a New National Record
Competing in the Women's 49kg 'Final A' event at the 20th Asian Games (Aichi-Nagoya 2026), Sri Lanka's Upamalika Ravihari secured 7th place overall while setting a new national record.During the competition, she lifted 70kg in the Snatch event and established the new national record by lifting 91kg in the Clean & Jerk event, bringing her total lifted weight to 161kg.Achieving such a feat and setting a national record amidst the high-level competition of the Asian Games 'Final A' stage clearly demonstrates the athlete's technical dedication and mental focus. In particular, the success achieved in the Clean & Jerk event will provide a solid foundation for her future endeavors in the international sporting arena.
