The Sri Lanka National Carrom team, who brought honour to the country by winning the
Runner-up in the Men’s Team Event and 3rd Place in the Women’s Team Event at the
7th Carrom World Cup held in the Maldives, met the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports,
Sunil Kumara Gamage, today (December 12). The meeting took place at the Duncan White
Auditorium of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Players, sportswomen, and officials
of the team participated in the event.
In addition to the success in the team events, Tasmila Kavindi secured the 4th place and
Nipuni Dilrukshi secured the 8th place in the Women’s Singles event, while Shaheed Hilmy
managed to secure the 5th place in the Men’s Singles event.
The players and sportswomen conveyed their gratitude to the Minister for the financial
support provided to participate in the tournament, stating that it would have been difficult to
achieve such victories without that assistance.
A detailed discussion was held between the team and the Minister regarding the plans
expected to be implemented next year to uplift the game of Carrom.
During the discussion, Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage emphasized that the Government’s
full support for the Carrom sport, which brings such victories, will continue to be provided
without fail in the future.
Furthermore, the Minister mentioned that they expect to implement a broad program to
promote the game across the island to enhance the popularity and standard of Carrom. He
added that encouraging players from the rural level to produce international-level champions
