South African national football team midfielder Jaden Adams has died at the age of 25, the country’s Sports Minister, Gaten Mackenzie, confirmed on Saturday.

“It is with great shock and a heavy heart that I learned of Jaden Adams’ passing,” Mackenzie said in a statement, calling him one of the brightest young talents to emerge in the history of South African football.

The cause of his death has not yet been revealed by authorities.

Police said they have launched an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was found in a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning.

Adams, who represented South Africa at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, played in all three of the group stage matches before missing the team’s round of 16 defeat to Canada.

His death came less than a month after the death of his grandmother, who died the day before the World Cup qualifier against the Czech Republic.

Despite the personal loss, Adams played for his country that day.

Police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death were ongoing.
