Police Sports Club created a mighty upset at Race Course when they beat league champions CR&FC by 40 points to 16 in the first semi-final of the Clifford Cup knockout tournament which was worked off yesterday (March 5). With this win Police enter the final and will meet the winners of the second semi-final (Scheduled today) which features a clash between CH&FC and Havelock SC at Race Course.

Police dominated the game from the kick off and earned their points through five tries, three conversions, two penalties and drop goal while CR responded with two tries and two penalties. The winners led 23-16 at half time.

The Police forwards were all over the park and helped Police chalk up this win. The other players who stood out for the winners were Sachith Silva, who scored two tries, and kicker Prince Chamara who put so much pressure on CR with his kicking boots. He also kicked a field goal in the second half of the game.

The only glimpse CR gave that they were league champions this season was when they fought move for move with Police in the first half and scored two tries. CR’s first half tries came off Thenuka Nanayakkara and Venura Kodagoda. The Red Shirts were completely outplayed in the second half.

Police were in devastating form in the second half and scored two tries off the effort of Sachith Silva. Shame Hopwood also had a brilliant game for the winners.

Police were also the Plate Championship winners in the league tournament.
