Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr. Sunil Kumara Gamage, has taken steps to temporarily suspend the registration of the national sports associations for cycling and badminton.
Extraordinary Gazette notifications regarding this were issued on October 20, 2026, and separate transitional committees have been appointed to streamline the administrative affairs of both the cycling and badminton associations.
This action has been taken under Sections 32 and 33 (as amended) of the Sports Act No. 25 of 1973.
According to the Gazette notification issued regarding the temporary suspension of the registration of the Cycling Federation of Sri Lanka, a transitional committee—chaired by Mr. Anura Maharachchi—has been appointed to oversee the future administrative operations of the sport. The committee has been entrusted with responsibilities including overseeing the administrative affairs of the Cycling Federation, investigating alleged fraud, corruption, and other irregularities within the association, drafting a new constitution in compliance with the Sports Act, and registering eligible members.
Furthermore, it is the committee’s responsibility to facilitate the election of a new board of office-bearers, following the convening of a Special General Meeting and an Annual General Meeting in accordance with the new constitution.
The relevant directives also provide for an election to be held to appoint a new board of office-bearers within 90 days of the registration of the new constitution.
Meanwhile, the registration of Sri Lanka Badminton has been temporarily suspended, and a transitional committee—chaired by Mr. M. H. S. S. Kusum Kumara—has been appointed to oversee its administrative operations. The five-member committee includes Niluka Karunaratne, Milinda Suriyaarachchi, Swadesh Randika de Silva, and Saman Srilal.
The primary responsibilities entrusted to this committee include streamlining the administration of the Badminton Association, investigating alleged fraud, corruption, and other irregularities, drafting a new constitution, and regularizing membership in accordance with that new constitution.
Furthermore, the committee has been empowered to convene general meetings under the new constitution and to oversee the election of a new board of office-bearers.
