In an exciting photo finish, D Y Malawarachchii of S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia set a new Junior National Record in the Boys Under-15 Freestyle on the third day of the Long Course National Swimming Championship, organized by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU) at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Pool yesterday.
Malawarachchi settled the gold medal with a time of 2:04.66, outstanding the previous Junior National Record of 2:06.08, set by Amrith Perera of Gateway College Colombo in 2016.
Silver medalist AIM Haathim of St. Peter’s College also broke the former record, finishing with a time of 2:04.69—just three milliseconds behind malawarachchi I in the intense photo finish.
