Sri Lanka Women’s Futsal Team provided a commendable performance by holding Nepal to a 2–2 draw at the first-ever South Asian Futsal Championship, presently happening in Thailand.
Commenting on the result, Jaswar Umar, President of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka, stated that this match marks an important milestone for Sri Lanka in the shorter format of the game.
“This is a new beginning for Sri Lanka in futsal. We are in the process of building strong futsal teams for both men and women. In time to come, futsal has the potential to become a widely popular sport across all parts of the country. Consequently, FFSL is developing a structured roadmap to train futsal players, coaches, and referees,” he said.
Both the Sri Lanka Men’s and Women’s National Futsal Teams are participating in the inaugural championship organized by the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF), underscoring the Federation’s commitment to expanding and institutionalizing futsal as a key discipline within Sri Lanka’s football development framework.
