Sri Lanka women won their first Women’s Asia Cup title, beating seven-time champions India by 8 wickets in the final on Sunday (28).
Chasing a target of 165, skipper Chamari Athapaththu led the innings with 61 runs, including 2 sixes and 9 boundaries. Despite Vishmi Gunaratne’s early run-out, Harshitha Samarawickrama contributed an unbeaten 69 off 51 balls, while Kaveesha Dilhari added 30 not out.
India, determining to bat first after winning the toss, posted 165 for 3. Opener Shafali Verma was the first to be dismissed for 16. Smriti Mandhana top-scored with 60, followed by Jemimah Rodrigues with 29 before being run out. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur was dismissed for 11 by Sachini Nisansala.
Sri Lanka’s Kavisha Dilhari took 2 wickets, with Sachini Nisansala and Chamari Athapaththu each taking one.
