
The project to promote cricket in schools that do not play cricket was launched in the Northern Province, and its first program was held today (15) at the Kilinochchi Sports Development Hall. The provision of sports equipment to the Kilinochchi District Talent Development Hall under the program was carried out under the patronage of the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage.
Under the program, sports equipment is to be provided to 47 schools in the Northern Province that do not play cricket.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage, said that the main objective of this project is to involve school children in rural areas in the game of cricket, and that sports can also be used as a major way to develop coexistence. Therefore, the Minister stated that it was decided to start this project in the Northern Province.
The School Cricket Development Project is to be implemented with the aim of building a foundation for creating a strong national cricket team and developing the game of cricket in a positive way by identifying human resources. The government has allocated Rs. 1500 million in the 2025 budget for the project.
The Kilinochchi District Secretary, the Director of Local Government, the Northern Provincial Sports Director and principals and teachers representing 47 schools were present on this occasion.
